Ravenous Reading
Get it. Ravenous. Like hunger. Gripping.
So. I just read the Hunger Games in 2 days. And I loved it! I am always quite skeptical of things that everyone else loves for some reason until I give in and end up loving it too. If you read this post but haven't read the book I don't think you should worry about spoilers. I tried to keep them out.
Lately we've been doing summarizing and determining importance in my class so I'll go ahead and give you my 3-2-1.
3 Things I found interesting are:
1. That the author didn't play up Peeta's background as a baker that much. Not that I can think of a lot to do with it; other than the initial story I am not sure it represents a lot other than sustenance for Katniss. I am mad that she used the word "stout" in his initial description because for some reason now I'll always be a little angry that Katniss is forced to be with him.
2. We didn't get to see Gale or Prim's response at the end of the book. I've been dying to know if Prim saw the same similarities in Rue that Katniss did. I assume the author did this so we read the next book, but really!?
3. How much the Peeta-Katniss relationship bugs me. I was surprisingly happy when Rue came into the picture and surprisingly furious when the "rules" basically forced Katniss to match up with a partner because I was so happy to see her ability to survive on her own.
2 Things I learned are:
1. It is possible to write a book involving death and a horrid situation without making it too gruesome. I was really worried going into it that I wouldn't be able to handle it.
2. It is also possible to have a strong female protagonist that doesn't completely annoy me. She doesn't make excuses for hard things. She doesn't depend on any type of male figure to make her happy. She has the ability to have meaningful relationships with family and other girls. I think she is a perfectly crafted character. Probably because I think if I met her in real life I would like her.
1 Question I still have is:
1. How does Gale feel about all this?! I thought he sounded like a soul mate at the beginning! So many times as I read I wished they could insert a snippet of his reaction! Jealousy? Delighted at her cleverness? Understanding? Indifferent? Angry at the games?
I was ready to go out and buy the second book because all the libraries are out, but I sadly read a few random pages of the second and got so much revealed to me. Enough to let me know I'm not going to be happy with the results. So I'll wait. Let me know your thoughts! If you haven't read it, you should.
Maybe it's time to give Twilight a chance...
